International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) in Peru and Jamaica

The International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) supported by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. It is a four-year program (2018-2022) designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work..

Destinations and mandates


  • City : Lima
  • Length of stay: 6 months (planned departures in May 2018),
  • 12 internships per year

All detailed mandates in Peru


  • Cities : Kingston, Spanish Town, Spalding
  • Length of stay: 6 months (scheduled departures in August 2018, then in January from 2019),
  • 10 internships per year

All detailed mandates in Jamaica


The mandates are related to the following topics:    

  • Environment
  • Animation of extracurricular activities for students
  • Defense of women's rights
  • Pedagogy and teaching of science, mathematics and ICTs    
  • Entrepreneurship    
  • Marketing and promotion    
  • Communication    
  • Networking with the community


All internships are held with education partners; in vocational training centers, in secondary schools, or directly with the Ministry of Education. They are mainly aimed to improve the quality of teaching and extracurricular activities for students.



Conditions and application


This program is free and covers the following fees:  

  • Living expenses and accommodation during the stay Airplane ticket;
  • Vaccines and travel insurance;
  • Monetary compensation up to $ 900 per month.

  • Assigned supervisor for each trainee
  • Logistical support and regular follow-ups from Éducation internationale
  • Pre-departure and return trainings  


Program eligibility

  • Have a post-secondary diploma;
  • Be between 19 and 30 years old at the time of the final selection;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Program of study or experience related to the mandate
  • Basic spoken and written skills in Spanish (for Peru) or English (for Jamaica)
  • Interest in intercultural exchange and adaptability
  • Never have participated in the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)
